PETERHOF: THE GLORY AND SPLENDOUR OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE
Peterhof is the summer royal residence located in the suburbs of St. Petersburg, which bears the same name. The residence and park were founded on the shore of the Gulf of Finland by Peter the Great himself, to commemorate the Russian Empire's victory in the Great Northern War.
Peterhof is often called the 'Russian Versailles', yet if one can imagine Versailles without its fountains, then Peterhof is an exceptional masterpiece of fountain sculpture, created to glorify the Russian Empire as a naval power.
The inimitable ensemble of Peterhof was formed over the course of three centuries. Nowadays it is adorned with over 150 fountains and cascades, original pavilions and sculptures, the palace and park alleys.
The palace and park were badly damaged during the Second World War, but were completely restored thanks to gifted and skillful Russian art restorers and palace keepers.
