Gatchina, a St. Petersburg suburb, became world-famous not only for the palace that Empress Catherine the Great had ordered built for her son, the future Emperor Paul I, and which bore the same name.
The palace, built in the style of an English hunting castle, which was quite popular during the period of classicism, stands on a hill, making a majestic impression. The palace was later rebuilt several times, adding towers, spires and a secret underground passage. And the royal legacy left the museum with many valuables and objects of art.
However, apart from the prominent palace, Gatchina was the first town in the Russian Empire to have electric lighting, telephone service and the first military airfield built.
Today, the city centre and museum reserve are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
