The Singer House, built by the American company of the same name in the early twentieth century, has become an architectural symbol of St. Petersburg. The company wanted to build something truly spectacular, in keeping with the fashion of the time, taller than the Winter Palace, the principal building of the Russian Empire. Although it was forbidden to build it taller than the Winter Palace, the company outwitted the Tsar and later faced an uproar of objections; the building itself provoked a wave of indignation among the common people.
On a tour to the Singer House, you will learn what caused these events, and then you will be offered an insight into the Art Nouveau style and its implementation in Russia. The culmination of the tour is a walk on one of the most remarkable historic rooftops, right up to the Singer legendary Dome, which offers a stunning view of Kazan Cathedral and the city.
