Alexandrovsky Palace was built by Catherine II for her favourite grandson, the future emperor Alexander I. The construction site was chosen close to the residence of Catherine II herself, the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoye Selo.
A number of owners loved the palace, and for many it became a home, such as Nicholas II, who moved here with his family immediately after the birth of his heir to the throne, Tsesarevich Alexei.
On 31 July 1917, Emperor Nicholas II and his family departed for their final journey from the Alexandrovsky Palace.
