TSARSKOE SELO: THE MYSTERY OF THE AMBER ROOM

Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin town) is located in the outskirts of St. Petersburg. Its astonishingly beautiful Catherine's Palace was built here in the early XVIII century and became one of the major summer residences of the Russian royal family.

Among the architects who took part in the decoration of the palace was an Italian architect, Francesco Rastralli, who became well known in Russia. It was to him that Elizabeth I entrusted the creation of the unique Amber Room.

The Amber Room became an emblematic example of the use of amber on a large scale, given that it is a fragile and sun-sensitive natural material that is difficult to work with, Rastrelli produced a genuine wonder of the world. Unfortunately the original Amber Room was lost during the Second World War, but was later successfully restored by Russian craftsmen in 2003.
