THE GENERAL STAFF BUILDING: DIVING INTO THE IMPRESSIONISM REALM

In 2014, the year of the Hermitage's 250th anniversary, the museum unveiled a new exhibition space in the eastern wing of the General Staff Building, on Palace Square. This was one of the most anticipated events for all connoisseurs of French art of the early 20th century. Works by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists occupy an entire floor of the museum, a huge space stretching along Palace Square and the Moika river embankment.

It is worth noting that the Hermitage has one of the best collections of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism art in the world. The exhibition in the General Staff's enfilades seems endless, and the paintings of just a single artist can occupy several halls at once, like those of Matisse, Renoir, Gauguin and Picasso.

The Hermitage presents paintings from the former collections of the Morozov Brothers, S. Schukin and the “Hidden Masterpieces of the Hermitage Collection». The most recent collection is particularly interesting, as most of the works were made by artists as private orders for the private collections of their clients. Many works were not seen before the end of the twentieth century, when the Hermitage opened the exhibition.
